UM alumna Kaley Martin (’16) earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication focused in Broadcast Production with a minor in Public Relations. She earned her Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Innovation from Texas Tech University in 2019 and her Ph.D. in Communication & Information Sciences from The University of Alabama in 2024. Her academic research focus within journalism and creative media is rooted in media effects and examines the sociology of content creators (i.e., influencers, TikTokers, YouTubers, videographers, etc.), their working conditions, and their content’s effects/culture on the greater society. Her dissertation work surrounds the lived experiences and lack of female representation among cinematographers across the filmmaking subindustries.
She has earned several research awards for her scholarship including a research grant from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, a research grant and scholarship from the Broadcast Education Association, and a scholarship from the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation/Ford Emerging Voices Scholarship program. She earned the college-wide 2023 C&IS Outstanding Research by a Doctoral Student for the College of Communication & Information Sciences at The University of Alabama during her doctoral studies. Kaley also earned a place on the University of Montevallo’s 2022 Class of 15 Within 15 from the UM National Alumni Association.
Professionally, Kaley has worked as a creative video producer and social media creator for over 8 years and has earned several awards including a Bronze Telly Award for 2D Animation, a Best of Show ADDY award for her cinematography work, and more. Her freelance video and photo work was featured in two national magazines. She also served as a 2022 National Association of Broadcasters Show Conference influencer for her work as a female filmmaker. Kaley has worked across the discipline of mass communication within multimedia, corporate, documentary, social media, and visual storytelling video production.
As the generalist in the Mass Communication program, Kaley teaches courses across our major and minor areas including media production, social media video storytelling, emerging media, and more. She lives in Clanton, Alabama with her husband and son.
